The august, International Criminal Court at The Hague, recently began the trial of a leader of the Islamist Militants (Ansaru Din), who took over Timbuktu, Mali in 2012. The Islamist ruled the city for ten months and installed strict Sharia law and, in the process, killed residents and destroyed some old buildings and ancient manuscripts.
It was an open and shut case, as the leader on trial, who is also an Islamic scholar, immediately admitted to the charges, said he was really sorry and asked for forgiveness! That was pretty Catholic of him, and probably, was a shrewd defense strategy, with the cards well stacked against him. Continue reading “TIMBUKTU ELEPHANTS”
The Arab Refugees are an Arab Responsibility
“Some Hungarians are calling to place pig heads along their border to deter Muslim refugees from entering the country!”
The numbers of Arab refuges have increased dramatically over the past few years. And so have the horror stories of the reasons for their flight, the perils of their treks, and the difficulties they face in entering Europe and thereafter remaining there. The Middle East Chess Game – Part Two
The US, Turkey and their friends set out, five years ago, to topple Assad of Syria. They encouraged and armed a hodgepodge mixture of Arab and non-Arab militants to the job. A good part of these militants turned out to be terrorists with an agenda of their own.
This medley group almost succeeded in ousting Assad, but the Russian cavalry appeared, at the last minute, and began routing the militants. Turkey, in a reflex action, struck back directly at Russia, which triggered a snowball that began rolling from the top of the mountain. Continue reading “The Middle East Chess Game – Part Two”
It Is The Gulf Of Mexico, Stupid!
CNN and the other unbiased media, reported the unprofessional and unsafe actions of the Iranians, who, last week, sent their small patrol boats to harass two US naval ships, a destroyer and a missile carrier. The puny boats got as close as quarter of a kilometer, before the ships fired warning shots to ward them off.
The Pentagon was indignant that the Iranians were so brash, to flaunt the Freedom of the Seas Law, and bother innocent ships routinely transiting the Gulf, and in international waters. Continue reading “IT IS THE GULF OF MEXICO, STUPID!”
Kerry Here, Kerry There, Kerry Everywhere!
John Kerry, the globe-trotter, has recently visited the following cities or countries, some more than once: Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hiroshima, Kabul, UK, Saudi, Georgia, France, Egypt, Mongolia, Iraq, Belgium, China, Norway and others.
He has managed, in those visits, to sort out a myriad of problems, including wars, covering the so-called Ukrainian, Syrian and Iraqi civil wars, Poland’s and the Baltic States’ insecurity and fear of a Russian imminent invasion, the unjustified Russian rejection of NATO surrounding it, selected the vegetables to add to the South China Sea boiling stew pot, bring Iran to its senses regarding its alleged atomic program, arrange to install atomic ballistic missiles in Poland and Romania as a deterrent to the Arab/Islamic atomic threat likely to materialize in the next two to three decades, and a plethora of critical issues that threaten world peace and doom our, one and only, earth. ITS NOT A TIDE FOR THE KURDS, IT’S A FLOOD
A few days ago we observed that the ebb and flow of politics seemed to indicate that the Kurds, after taking Manbij, will keep their head low and avoid antagonizing Turkey. They didn’t, and continued northwards towards Jarabulus on the Turkish/Syrian Border.
Turkey was ready and certainly able. Following two days of artillery pounding, Turkish tanks rolled into Syria yesterday, thus realizing the long-expected scenario of a Turkish military presence inside Syria.
The pretexts and justifications for this action may be “dime a dozen”, but once inside, they become difficult to dislodge and eject. A similar situation has existed in north Iraq near Mosul, for almost a year now. Continue reading “ITS NOT A TIDE FOR THE KURDS, IT’S A FLOOD”
THE EBB AND FLOW OF POLITICS !
Conditions, circumstances and opportunities are continuously changing, and accordingly, political positions change.
For five years, Turkey was dead against Assad of Syria. In fact, it took the leading role in inflaming the Syrian, so-called, civil war and was the vanguard in calling and working for Syria’s Assad ouster.
Then a series of events took place. Turkey got carried away and shot a Russian fighter jet, Crippling Russian economic sanctions were placed on Turkey, the long established Turkish Kurdish ceasefire collapsed and a mini Turkish civil war commenced, the Turkish tourist industry all but collapsed, the Syrian army pulled back from the brink of defeat with Russian air power intervention, the EU reneged on all its promises to Turkey, The USA became uneasy about Turkish policies and made it obvious by supporting the Syrian Kurds to probably create their own state in northern Syria, ISIS began targeting Turkish cities, Turkey became isolated geopolitically and then, came the attempted Turkish military coup to oust the president, which was rumored to have been instigated and/or blessed by the American CIA. The last event was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” causing Turkey to change its policies dramatically. Continue reading “THE EBB AND FLOW OF POLITICS”

RUSSIAN BOMBERS BASED IN IRAN!
Wow, So many birds with one stone. Is this a game changer in the Middle East?
It was reported yesterday (Tue Aug 16, 2016) that long range Russian bombers flew out of an Iranian military airfield to bomb targets in Aleppo, Syria. This is the first time in over thirty years that a foreign a military presence is seen in Iran. And a first for the Russian military in Iran. What does this mean?
The Syrian regime: especially as far as the battle of Aleppo is concerned. It gives Russian bombers better logistics and efficacy (Shorter flight time and, hence, more strikes per plane). Continue reading “RUSSIAN BOMBERS BASED IN IRAN!”

‘TIS THE SEASON, FOR CHINA BASHING
While the Russian hunting season continues separately, China bashing has increased pari passu with the rise in military tensions in the South China Sea.
So far, the bashing has concentrated on media assassination by a continuous stream of news highlighting the negative or weak side of China – regardless whether it is true or not. This stream of false or biased news is passed from one news media to the other, as in a relay race, so as to ensure it is nonstop.
One mass media organization recently wailed the deepening of China’s economic slowdown describing it as being in the “doldrums”. All this, because industrial output and retail sales were below expectations for July 2016. It attributed the poor showing to the difficulties China is facing in transforming its economy away from pure production. It then went on to name a number of other woeful results including Chinese cinema ticket sales. Continue reading “‘TIS THE SEASON, FOR CHINA BASHING”

TO BE OR NOT TO BE – THE PALESTINIAN LAND CONFISCATION SAGA
Israel reminds me of Sylvester the pussy cat (Puddy Tat) cartoon. He can’t make up his mind whether to gobble up and eat Tweety, the bird, and get whacked on the head by the Little Old Lady’s broom, or wait until a more opportune time appears. In all events, he is set on eating Tweety, but the question is when? Answer: When he can get away with it!
Similarly, Israel, which is built on Palestinian land, keeps expanding by gobbling up and confiscating additional Palestinian properties. The rate of confiscation increases and decreases according to the mood of international public opinion, but more importantly, according to US political pressure. If it can get away with it, Israel will gobble up Palestinian land quite happily. But if US pressure bears upon it, it ceases in appearance, while in reality delaying until an appropriate window pops up. Continue reading “TO BE OR NOT TO BE – THE PALESTINIAN LAND CONFISCATION SAGA”
