US BEGINS TO PRESSURE PALESTINIANS
MARSAL COMMENTS: President Trump just phoned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The message was to negotiate directly with the Israelis and find a solution. The US will help, but will not impose its view on any party. And as a gesture of goodwill, the Israelis have stopped their planned approved new settlements building.
Does this mean the court is in the Palestinian court now? Or is another classical trap where the Palestinians can’t get solid commitments from the Israelis and are then blamed for not wanting peace and for letting a golden opportunity slip by?
Is Trump using business marketing tactics and salesman negotiating technics on a 69 year old tragic and complex problem?
GENERALLY: Pessimistic, as the US is not contributing any positive ideas that are acceptable to the two parties. Has the feel of a PR lip service to the problem.
NEGATIVE FOR: Palestinians
POSITIVE FOR: Israelis
IMPACT POTENTIAL: Low, as nothing is likely to change
TIME SCOPE: (Short Term)
